Silent Night Lyrics Changed to Drop ‘Christ’ and ‘Son of God’ From School Performance

Christmas carol controversy erupted at a New York school after someone had the brilliant idea to remove all religious references to one of the best-known religious Christmas song.

Why Pick a Song About Jesus…If You Don’t Want to Sing About Jesus?

Parents were outraged that fifth-graders were forced to sing “Silent Night” without lines such as “holy infant” and “Christ the savior” in a school performance.

Officials thought the religious references would offend non-Christians. However, many parents were angry with the changes. (source)

“Silent Night” was written nearly 200 years ago, as a religious song… why not sing something else if you don’t want to touch religious sensitivities? Like “Jingle Bells” — that’s a cultural song void of any religious references.

Watch / listen to the video of the kids’ choir, and read the lyrics to “Silent Night” below.

“Silent Night” lyrics:

Silent night, Holy night
All is calm, all is bright
‘Round yon virgin , mother and child
Holy infant so, tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace,
Sleep in heavenly peace.

Silent night, Holy night
Shepherds quake, at the sight
Glory streams from heaven afar
Heavenly, hosts sings Hallelujah.
Christ the Savior is born,
Christ the Savior is born.

Silent night, Holy night
Son of God, love’s pure light
Radiant beams from thy holy face
With the dawn of redeeming grace,
Jesus, Lord at thy birth,
Jesus, Lord at thy birth.
