Is Jordin Sparks “still” a Christian, and is she married to Jason Derulo, the man she’s been seen canoodling with in photos? — Those seem to be the questions fans of the the 22-year-old star of the T.D. Jakes produced film “Sparkle” have been wondering, considering that it wasn’t too long ago that she was talking about waiting for marriage before sex while rocking a purity ring.
Fans of the former “American Idol” who once spoke loud and proud about wearing a purity ring (which expresses the intent to wait for marriage before sex) have noticed what seems to be a change in Sparks since she’s been in a relationship, with many suspecting that the absence of her purity ring means that she and Derulo have been intimate.
“Jordin Sparks can’t possibly be a virgin…no way,” speculated one Twitter user.
The young singer confirmed in January that the purity ring was no longer a daily part of her life, and that it was due to her affection for Derulo.
“I don’t wear it (purity ring) exactly everyday anymore but I always have something there,” she said in January. When I was 13 my mom spoke to me about purity and waiting for marriage and different things like that. And, you know, at the time I was like, ‘Sure that’s great,’ but I can’t say what’s gonna happen a couple of months from now. People grow.”
Sparks’ growth might have gone unnoticed by Christianity Today, which featured her in its October issue for the “50 Women You Should Know” cover story. Sparks is listed among notable women in “the Arts, Entertainment and Sports industry” presumably because she is a Christian, as CT explains: “We asked key leaders which Christian women are most profoundly shaping the evangelical church and North American society. This is who they picked.”
It was in 2008 that Sparks issued a bold defense of purity rings at the MTV Music Awards, after which she appeared on Fox News to discuss her decision to wait for marriage before sex, sharing that her Christian faith helped inform that decision.
She shared with Fox News a year later, when she was 18, that she didn’t mind being a role model for teens, saying “that’s something I don’t take lightly.”
During the same time ,EverydayChristian.com reported Sparks saying: “My faith has been a humungous part of how I have looked at my career. I started out singing in church very young and it took off from there. With my purity stance, I’m very careful about what I wear and the lyrics in my songs.”
The publication also noted that for her 18th birthday, Sparks had “1 Timothy 4:12″ tattooed on her wrist (check it out here) — which reads: “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity.”
Recent interviews haven’t shared much about Sparks’ faith, but the talented starlette and her boyfriend, Jason Derulo, appear on Wendy William’s TV show this week — and I wouldn’t put it past Williams to ask about the purity ring, waiting for marriage before sex and how her faith plays a factor.
To her credit, Sparks shared in October that she and Derulo are discussing marriage after a year of dating, which may not affect fans, who are used to young celebs “outgrowing” their pre-marital chastity vows.
As Sparks has said, things change — and one Twitter user recently observed: “Who remembers when Purity Rings were vital for some young single female celebs like @JordinSparks @MileyCyrus @selenagomez?! Bfs = no rings.”
